Whips query on Central bank

DailyMirror:

Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardane and Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga yesterday queried from President Mahinda Rajapaksa as to why the Central Bank requested people to exercise due care when depositing their money with the banks and the financial institutions authorized by it.

Mr. Amaratunga, having read the Daily Mirror news item in this regard, had requested Mr. Gunawardane to direct this question at the President at the Parliamentary Consultative Committee meeting of the Finance Ministry yesterday.

However, the President reportedly replied that, nowhere in the world did a Central Bank take the responsibility to compensate depositors of a bank or a financial institution declared bankrupt.

He told the meeting that the government would take the responsibility with regard to state banks.

The Central Bank, in its newspaper advertisement, has announced the names of the banks and the financial institutions authorized by it also saying that it did not guarantee the safety of deposits, and therefore asked people to exercise due care when making deposits.
