Where is the voters register?

People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) said yesterday the election monitor has received the highest number of complaints in the Colombo District claiming that a large number of people had not received voter registration forms in the District.

PAFFREL Director, Rohana Hettiarachchi said that in Batticaloa a number of Grama Niladaris had not received voter registration forms. He said that there had been a large number of issues in Nuwara Eliya as well where people have complained about the language barrier.

“Many of the people in the estate sector have had trouble registering because some of the Grama Niladaris in the area do not know how to read or write in Tamil. This has become a big problem,” he said.

According to PAFFREL surveys carried out in 13 divisional secretariats in nine district in the last three months where the election monitor interviewed 4000 voters and a number of Grama Niladaris it was found that out of 126 families in Gampaha only 20 had received voter registration forms.

“These are just some of the numbers. There are many more who have not received their forms,” he said. Hettiarachchi said that the Elections Commissioner has been informed and that he has vowed to take necessary measure to rectify these issues.
