UPFA candidate assaulted and robbed me: Businessman

A businessman in Matara complained to police that one of the UPFA candidates contesting the Southern Provincial Election, Aruna Gunaratne and his men had entered his house by force and robbed him of cash and jewellery valued at more than Rs.500, 000 on Saturday evening.

He said a gold chain, a bracelet and Rs.500, 000 in cash had been robbed by them after assaulting him. He had been admitted to the Matara Hospital for treatment.

The businessman said he was a supporter of UPFA candidates Hemal Gunasekara, former DIG D. W. Prathapasinghe and Sarath Yapa and that the suspect was displeased with him for that reason.

However UPFA candidate Aruna Gunaratne who denied any involvement in the alleged incident said that he had been at a meeting in Deniyaya at that time.  Matara Police are investigating the incident.
