UN Resident Co-ordinator for Sri Lanka, Neil Buhne said that the GSP+ trade concession is very important to Sri Lanka and the United Nations will give the fullest cooperation in the coordination work for Sri Lanka to get the concession. He said when there is a competitive nature in the world trade, GSP+ concession will be important for Sri Lanka.
He said this when he met Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratna in Colombo, recently. Mr. Buhne also said that the GSP+ concession will help the investors in Sri Lanka as well. As such the world organization is ever ready to do the coordination work to get this concession, the Prime Minister’s office said quoting Mr. Buhne.
At the discussion Prime Minister Jayaratna stressed that Sri Lanka is not ready to go begging after the international countries to get the concession. But, he said with the end of the war when development work had been launched, denial of this facility was a bit of a problem, the Prime Minister said. As such to get this facility United Nations Organisation too has a crucial role to play.
Mr. Buhne replying stated that the United Nations is satisfied of the accelerated development activities in Sri Lanka and the government’s effort to bring the standard of living of the people in the North and East. In the meantime the world organization will assist the development work in various parts of the country. Those development works had been commenced in Badulla, Moneragala and the neighbourhood of Colombo. Mr. Buhne said that their aim is to give continues assistance for Sri Lanka’s development work, the statement said.
