TISL calls for Fair and Impartial Investigations into the Jaffna University Student deaths

Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) urges the Inspector General of Police to thoroughly investigate into the deaths of two students that took place in Jaffna on the evening of 21st October 2016. The Criminal Investigation Division is currently conducting an investigation into the deaths of the two Jaffna University students, who were travelling on a motorcycle.

TISL requests the Inspector General of Police to ensure that the investigation is conducted in a fair and impartial manner, being guided by the utmost need for their to be public confidence in the process.

TISL queries from the IGP the reason behind the Police initially reporting that two young men had died as a result of a road accident and later admitting they had been shot. Whilst acknowledging the responsibility taken by the Police in maintaining law and order in the country, TISL further requests the Police to provide an explanation of the steps that will be taken to ensure such incidents can be avoided in the future and what changes will be made to ensure the reporting of such incidents is done in a credible and reliable manner.
