Co-deputy leader of Sri Lanka main opposition United National Party (UNP)and parliamentarian Karu Jayasuriya is to present the Right to Information Bill in the parliament again this week.
Jayasuriya’s Bill was first presented to parliament last September. It has been re-listed to be taken up in parliament on Tuesday (21), the local media has reported.
The private member’s Bill has been re-listed following a request made by Jayasuriya from the Speaker.
Jayasuriya first presented the Bill to the House in September, but was withdrawn after the government said a similar piece of legislation would be presented to the House shortly.
Since the government had not yet presented such a Bill, Jayasuriya had requested the Speaker to re-present the Bill.
The Right to Information Bill was mooted during the UNF government in 2003, but was unable to receive parliamentary approval due to the change of government.
