The Colombo Fort Magistrate yesterday acquitted a Superintendent of Police who was detained under CID custody for allegedly attempting to defraud Rs.7.5 million from a businessman by promising to provide 2000 tonnes of empty artillery shells using the name of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa and his wife.
When the magisterial inquiry into the matter was taken up for hearing, the CID informed Court that the suspect could be acquitted from charges under the instructions of the Attorney General.
Meanwhile, the detention period for a retired Assistant Superintendent of Police and two other suspects who were allegedly involved in the incident were extended till August 31 by the Magistrate Ms. Lanka Jayaratne. Further inquiry into the matter was fixed for August 31.
