Some candidates of the main political parties appear to be spending as much as one million rupees a day for their election campaign, and therefore laws and strict guidelines should be introduced to limit such activities, a leading election monitoring grop said yesterday.
The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) said the newspaper advertisements that are published on a daily basis should be costing the candidates at least one million rupees a day.
PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi said a mayor could only earn about Rs.500,000 during his or her four-year term in terms of salary while a Pradeshiya Sabha member even less than Rs.240,000.
