Rs.20 billion for new defence HQ

The government yesterday presented a supplementary estimate in parliament seeking Rs.20 billion from the Treasury to construct a new Defence Headquarters.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in his capacity as Defence Minister, had sought parliamentary approval for this estimate.

The motion says the funds are sought for the special project called the construction of Defence Headquarters. In the budget too, the government had made the highest allocation of Rs.210 billion for the Defence Ministry.

Various institutions such as the Urban Development Authority have been placed under this Ministry.

The government had also decided to relocate the Army Headquarters at Battaramulla under the list of new development projects being planned for the city. so on.
