Public Defy Weather To Take Legal Advice

Despite heavy rains, people of Ibbagamuwa in Kurunagala District were shown enthusiasm and participate at the free legal clinic conducted by legal experts and the legal officers of Foreign Employment Bureau (FEB) held recently.

“The Shelter for Integrity” legal arm of Transparency International Sri Lanka organized this legal clinic with the intention of extending its services to the North Western Province with the assistance of “Deva Srana” community based organization in Kurunagala.  The clinic was especially focused on foreign Employment and State land issues in the region.

During the programme more than 20 complaints were received from Yakalla, Ibbagamuwa, Hettipola and Wariyapola areas. Non collaboration of governmental institutions such as Divisional Secretariat offices, Agrarian Development offices and Inefficiency of the lawyers in the area were the most common issues reported at the legal clinic.

People who had issues related to foreign employment were able to receive immediate response from M. Kahathuduwa Assistant legal manageress and R. Sumanaweera Investigation officer of FEB.  The issues related to other regulatory authorities were referred over the phone for urgent and effective solutions. In addition Dharma Wijaya Senevirathne, the Director of Legal Aid Commission Kurunegala was at hand to receive cases which could be handled by the Legal Aid Commission.

The public appreciated the invaluable service offered by the shelter for integrity and promised to share information on Shelter for Integrity with other community members. The public requested the Legal Aid Commission to conduct another mobile legal clinic within next month.
