Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake yesterday expressed concern over misuse of State resources and the State-run media by the ruling coalition in support of its LG polls campaign.
In a statement issued immediately after the finalization of results, Dissanayake said: “The manner in which some political parties and groups conducted themselves, both before the day of the poll and on the day of the poll, and also the misuse of State resources and State-owned media is regrettable.”
The Polls Chief said that there had been incidents of violence in the run-up to the poll and on the day of the polls.
He also referred to many intra-party clashes among UPFA and UNP candidates, while asserting that in spite of some incidents it was possible to hold the election ‘in a fairly pleasant atmosphere’ compared to previous local government elections.
