The members of the leading Trade Unions of the country along with the non- governmental and civil society organizations have formed a Peoples Movement against governments electricity tariff hike.
More than 100 Trade Unions and Civil Organizations have pledged their support to the movement where Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) will serve as one of the conveners of the movement.
The Peoples Movement has decided to stage a protest campaign on 09th May 2013 in front of the Fort Railway Station to demand government to totally withdraw the tariff hike. They have organized protest rally too which is to be held on the 15th May with the participation of political parties of the opposition.
The Government has failed the public by increasing the electricity tariff and then they fooled the public again with an inadequate relief that would not compensate anyone said Saman Rathnapriya spokesman to the Movement.
He also pooh- poohed the relief by saying the people who consumes less than 60 units will not be benefitted. He claimed that the reasons given by the government on the tariff hike are completely false. People should not be held responsible for the losses in the CEB he added.
Hence we have decided to agitate against the tariff revision until government withdraw it completely Rathnapriya said.
