New education policy committee, a mockery: CTU

blackboardDailyMirror

Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) yesterday rejected the proposed national education policy committee by the new Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena calling it a total mockery.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror Ceylon Teachers Union president Joseph Stalin said this kind of committees come on and off but would not change the system of education at present in the country.

“The salary increments proposed and approved by the Cabinet during the last two years to teachers and principals by the former Education Minister have not been properly implemented yet,” he said.

The CTU had filed a case regarding this issue in court.

The new minister had proposed earlier an education policy which addressed longstanding issues and problems  –  mainly among them were the elimination of malpractices over Grade I admissions.

The new policy also contained a revised categorising of schools, the fair distribution of educational resources, training of English medium teachers for state schools, development of English and information technology instructions, revamping of the school syllabus, and a revision of examination and exam assessment procedures.

Mr. Stalin observed the increase in failures at the concluded O/L exams was due to lesser number of school days during the previous year.

“The past academic year had only 180 working days, and this is due to the unplanned elections and workshops which disrupted even term tests.
