Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) has invited Members of Parliament to a discussion on combating corruption in Sri Lanka.
TISL hopes that the discussion will provide a forum to exchange ideas and suggestions with a view to arrive at a consensus on a possible action plan to curb corruption, which can be implemented after approval by Parliament.
The discussion will be held at Water’s Edge on Thursday, 06 June 2013. Leaders of political parties represented in Parliament will initiate the discussion followed by an open discussion.
In Sri Lanka, numerous laws have been enacted to prevent corruption and several institutions have been established to take action against those involved in corruption. However, it is evident that these institutions have not been successful in taking effective steps to combat corruption and malpractices. The problem seems to be aggravating by the day, particularly due to numerous pressures being brought and the perpetrators not being adequately punished.
TISL believes that the unhealthy environment created by such actions has adversely affected the country’s development efforts. TISL is of the opinion that representatives of the country’s Legislature are able to contribute much towards combating corruption.
TISL is committed to minimise corruption and promote integrity and good governance in the country and works closely with the State and Corporate Sectors and Civil Society Organisations in its efforts to build a nation of integrity.
