The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said the money collections that were being carried out in schools were a threat to the free education system of the country.
“We have been expressing our concern regarding this matter on several occasions. However, the Education Ministry does not seem to have taken any measures to curb such activities from recurring in schools yet,” CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said. According to Mr. Stalin a large number of schools including national schools are carrying out money collections charging substantially large sums of money from each student. He pointed out that the most recent incident of money collection occurred in several schools for the printing of papers for the second term test. “The Education Ministry has issued several circulars prohibiting the money collection from students.
