It has been made mandatory for filling stations to issue a bill to consumers every time they purchase fuel, Petroleum Industries Minister Susil Premajayantha said yesterday.
He said this step was taken to protect the rights of consumers as there had been a marked increase in the number of complaints received from consumers against filling station owners. protect the rights of consumers as there had been a marked increase in the number of complaints received from consumers against filling station owners.
“The main objective in this exercise is to provide a quality service to the consumer and ensure they get 100 per cent clean fuel. CEYPETCO with the assistance of the police has conducted raids to detect fuel dens where petrol and diesel are mixed with other ingredients and then sell them to unsuspecting consumers,” the minister said.
He said he instructed CEYPETCO Chairman Harry Jayawardana to advise all CEYPETCO filling stations to issue a bill every time fuel is sold.
Dismissing rumours that a fuel hike was on the pipeline, the minister said the government had no intention of increasing fuel prices despite the sharp increase in world market fuel prices.“The CEYPETCO incurs a loss of Rs.41 on a litre of Kerosene, Rs.33 on a litre of diesel and two rupees on a litre of petrol. We have contemplated several measures such as taking up bunkering and the marketing of tar and furnace oil as a means of minimising our losses,” the minister said. The action taken by previous governments to sell CEYPETCO’s trading activities to the private sector has had negative repurcussions.
