Western Provincial Council minister and Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) strongman Udaya Gammanpila said that less than one percent of candidates declare their assets.
He made these comments when five candidates contesting for the upcoming local government elections went to declare their assets before the Elections Commissioner.
“The JHU has set many examples since entering the political arena in good governance. The problem is that the Elections Commissioner himself cannot publicise the declaration of assets of each candidate,” the Western Provincial Council minister said.
“Therefore we will press the government to bring in a system whereby the public can know the assets that each candidate possesses at the time of contesting an election especially a local government election,” he said.
