Karu vows to continue demanding for a Right to Information Bill

Acting leader of Sri Lanka’s main opposition United National Party (UNP) Karu Jayasuriya says that he would continue to demand the government for the implementation of the Right to Information Bill.

Jayasuriya made two attempts to present a Right to Information Bill in parliament and the government defeated the motion in the House last month.
Speaking about the Bill, he has told the media that it is first a citizen’s right that gives strong emphasis to freedom of expression and therefore it is fundamental to the democratic process.

He has said the next course would be for the Bill to be made a strong social demand that would enable it to gain more credence.

However, Jayasuriya has said that he would take the responsibility as a legislator and as an elected MP to strengthen the voice of the people in demanding the Right to Information.

“I will engage with other political parties in the opposition to examine what possibilities exist to bring the Bill to parliament once again as a new Joint Opposition Bill,” he has said.
