The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is planning to lodge a complaint with the Bribery Commission against former Chief Minister of the North Central Provincial Council, Berty Premalal Dissanayake regarding the alleged swindling of Rs.110 million meant for the development of 67 irrigation tanks in Anuradhapura, party officials said.
North Central Provincial Council JVP member Wasantha Samarasinghe told Daily Mirror that the Presidential Investigation Unit (PIU) that conducted investigations into this misappropriation of money handed over its report to the government on November 25, 2010.
However, Mr. Samarasinghe said, no action had been taken against the former chief minister.
“There are charges against Mr. Dissanayake, his secretary and other top officials of the ministry. In the past, Rs.110 million had been allocated to develop 67 irrigation tanks. However, money had been embezzled without any work being done. We will go to the Bribery Commission soon,” he said.
He said that his party was also planning to take action against those involved in the misappropriation of money meant for the payment of compensation to farmers affected by the Mavil Aru water crisis in 2006.
Mr. Dissanayake ran the council as the chief minister for three consecutive terms from 1999.
