Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa yesterday said that the inefficiency and corruption of the Municipal Councils made it difficult to solve the garbage problem of Colombo but not the shortage of funds.
“The government had not spent extra money to make the cleaner Colombo city you see now. What is needed is constant supervision and maintenance of the city cleaning process carrying out by the private institutions” he stressed.
He was addressing a function held at the Mount Lavinia Hotel to clarify the developing and beautification project planned by the government for the Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal Council.
Mr. Rajapaksa said with the Chinese assistance, a vast project will be activated by next year to solve the flood problem in Colombo city including rectifying the Beira Lake and connected canals. He further said the World Bank would provide USD 150 million to construct new lakes for flood control.
