A large crowd gathered in Badulla to obtain free legal advices from TISL’s legal arm “Shelter for Integrity” with the assistance of “Future in Our Hands Development Foundation” on the 29th June 2014.
Mr. Prabath Kumara, the Executive Director of “Future in our Hands Development Foundation” said that, many malpractices are taking place in Government institutes in Badulla and the most of those institutes failed to provide a better service to the public. Conducting a free legal clinic with the support from the Transparency International Sri Lanka is a valuable opportunity for public to obtain immediate solutions to their grievances said Prabath Kumara.
The legal officers from Foreign Employment Bureau, Legal Aid Commission,Human Rights Commission and legal facilitators attended the legal clinic and there was a special focus on Labour, admin and foreign employment issues in Badulla District.
During the clinic public from many remote areas such as Bandarawela, Hali- Ela, Badulla, Passara, Moneragala and Demodara turned up for legal advice.. Non-collaboration and inefficiencies of the public officers were the main issues identified among the reported complainants.
Most of the complaints have been submitted to the coordinator Mr. Jagath Wickramasinghe of Human rights commission, Badulla by legal facilitators. Mrs. Shyamila Abeyweera who was the officer of Legal Aid Commission Mrs. L Kahathuduwa Director – Legal of Foreign Employment Bureau was there to provide immediate solutions to the victims.
“Shelter for Integrity” has agreed to take few issues relating to Land sector and Tamil Journalist’s from the area requested to conduct a legal clinic in Haputale area for the benefit of the Tamil speaking people.
