High degree of fraud at universities

Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake yesterday alleged that the ministry had discovered several instances of corruption and frauds committed by both academic and non-academic staff of universities.

He told a news conference that six Peradeniya university lecturers were still being paid their salaries although they had stopped conducting lectures a long time ago.

“The Peradeniya dental faculty has the highest expenditure when compared with other university academic courses. However, none of the students brought this matter to our attention,” the minister said.

He said the university systems were now being controlled by students and not by the administrative authorities.

“We will ensure that the students enjoy freedom and democracy. We will not impose any regulations to curb student union activities. However, we will not tolerate any political dictatorship within the universities either. The universities should be transformed into institutions where all political views are tolerated,” he said while accusing the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) of pressuring students to join its political movement.

The minister said certain student faculties affiliated to the JVP have gained control of hostels and other buildings at several universities by force.

“A group of JVP affiliated students in the Kelaniya University has gained control of the hostel which was built within the university premises for female students. A similar incident has occurred at the Gampaha Wickramarachchi indigenous medicine faculty where the students have forcibly gained control of an entire ward for their accommodation,” he said.

The minister said such action would not be tolerated and immediate action would be taken to curb such rackets.
