Complaints have been received about government attempts to recruit some 200 labourers to the Colombo Municipality in violation of election laws, which prohibit recruitment to public institutions after elections have been declared, a leading election monitoring group said.
People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi said he would write to Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya about this matter.
Mr. Hettiarachchi said complaints had been received some 50 labourers had been interviewed for recruitment to the Colombo Municipality where the elections have been declared.
“We cannot criticize the recruitment of employees to the public service. Anyway, it should not be done in the areas where elections have been declared. I will write to the Commissioner in this respect,” he said.
Mr. Hettiarachchi said the Negombo Municipal Council and the Kolonnawa Urban Council had been identified as the two areas most vulnerable for election law violations by erecting unlawful cut-outs.
“We will pay special attention to these two areas during the monitoring process,” he said.
