Govt. loses 75 M. says Gemunu

DailyMirror

The government loses Rs. 75 million a year due to anomalies in the transport regulations, Private Bus Operators chief Gemunu Wijeratne said yesterday.

“We have appealed to the Presidential Secretariat and the Ministry of Finance to take action against the discrepancies in the country’s bus operating system due to which they say the government incurs a loss of Rs. 75 million,” he said.

There are about 600 buses that ply without route permits of which about 500 buses were those that service on the long distance routes.

He said that since the Government had not adhered to a proper tender system, millions of rupees had been lost everyday.

“We have made complaints with the Transport Ministry and all the other relevant authorities but nobody is doing anything about it and it is out of our control. In fact this issue has only worsened,” Wijeratne said.
