Another fraudster who had collected Rs 3.3 million from job seekers promising to send them to foreign countries for employment was remanded by Negombo Magistrate. He had been running an illegal job agency for a long time in Pahala Yagoda, Ganemulla.

Verdict changed

The Human Rights Commission (HRC) is investigating into an incident where an officer is alleged to have changed a verdict given by the HRC. The verdict relates to complaint made by a soldier against some senior officers for allegedly violating his Fundamental Rights.

Inland Revenue Officer gone missing

A special police team has been deployed to arrest an officer of the Inland Revenue Department W. Darmasiri, who is alleged to have received a bribe of Rs.4 million from the Golden Key Credit Card Company for making a lower tax assessment. The officer had not reported for duty since January 13 this year and had vacated the house where he resided, CID informed the Mount Lavinia Magistrate.

Obtaining a bank loan on forged deed

Panadura Magistrate remanded W.Jayatissa De Silva, the owner of the Panadura Leeds International School and his wife following the alleged misappropriation of Rs. 100 million from Bank of Ceylon, Panadura for mortgaging a land and a building by producing a forged deed.

More GK depositors complain to SC

Twenty one Golden Key credit card depositors yesterday petitioned the Supreme Court of the likelihood of their losing their deposits and the interest due.They cited the Monetary Board of Sri Lanka, the Finance Ministry the credit card company and other individuals as respondent, and requested the SC to order the release of their money.

Kiribathgoda flyover cost an exorbitant sum

JVP MP Bimal Rathnayake told Parliament that the government had spent Rs. 500,000 per square metre for the newly constructed Kiribathgoda flyover. This was because the government decided to use expertise and material from England although there were local engineering companies ready to construct the flyover for lesser cost using concrete.

Crooked job agents

A series of complaints have been received against foreign job agents and brokers in Eastern Province who sent under-aged girls for foreign employment on false documents. the Sri Lanka Bureau briefed Eastern police units on how to tackle them. The Special Investigative Unit of the Foreign Employment Bureau addressed the police units in Batticaloa and Trincomalee to create awareness on how they should act or collaborate with the Bureau when they received complaints of corruption and malpractices.

A female arrested for fraud

A female who had bogusly taken money from job seekers in Kamburugamuwa area promising to send them to foreign countries for employment was prosecuted by Matara police. The fraudulent agent had defrauded over Rs.1.3 million according to the police.

Politician in cocaine mystery

Controversy surrounds the alleged involvement of a popular UPFA ex-Provincial Councilor in a recent case where cocaine was detected during a raid conducted by the Excise Department and attempts are being made by the WPC member to hush-up the matter. Excise Department sleuths raided a Maharagama building which is alleged to have been used as this politician’s political office. In the raid two men were arrested and cocaine seized.

Officials attacked for preventing illegal sand mining

Wild Life Department officials attempting to prevent illegal sand mining in the protected area of Anawilundawa in Chilaw area have been attacked by a local politician. A Chairman of a Pradeshiya Sabha had intervened when the officials tried to arrest the culprits who had then escaped. When the officers were returning after making a complaint to the Chilaw Police, they were stopped and brutally assaulted by a gang.

Cop aiding ganja smugglers nabbed

A police constable who aided a man to smuggle six kilos of Ganja from Kataragama to Kandy was arrested at Peradeniya by the Central Anti Vice Squad (CAVS). Ganja was being transported in a box under the seat of the private bus he was travelling in. The constable had aided the smuggler to avoid police check points on the way to Kandy by taking Rs. 10,000 from the smuggler.

Another ‘Sakvithi’ missing

Another businessman, who had obtained more than 30 million rupees from a large number of people had gone missing, the police said. The suspect, who had run a foreign employment agency and tuition classes, had taken money from at least 38 people under false pretences. The suspect had promised to give foreign employment. His office at Rajagiriya had also  been closed down.

The Supreme Court allowed a fundamental rights violation application on 23rd of March by two depositors of the Golden key Credit Card Company Limited against the Monetory Board of the Central Bank, the ministry of finance, the governor of central bank, the Golden Key Credit Card Company, its directors and the Ceylinco Consolidated Pvt. Limited.

Child immunization programme in jeopardy

The GMOA and All Ceylon Government Medical Officers’ Association (ACGMOA) warned that the entire immunization programme was in jeopardy due to waste, corruption and negligence on the part of the Health Ministry. GMOA secretary Dr. Bimantha Gunasekara said that Health Minister , Ministry Secretary and Director General of Health Services should take responsibility for the death of 12-year old Peshala Hanshini on 20 March, a day after being receiving the Rubella vaccination.

Two students released on bail

Two students remanded for allegedly printing fake cash notes were released by the Negombo Magistrate on certified bail of Rs. 100,000 each. The students had been following a computer course after they sat for the O Level examination and one was nabbed when he was attempting to change the fake notes in Negombo town by the police. Thereafter, the police identified the computer and papers as well as the place they used to print the fake cash notes.

A fraudster sentenced

A job agent was prosecuted by the Mt. Lavinia police for allegedly defrauding Rs. 135,000 from a job seeker promising send him to Japan. The fraudster was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment and fined Rs. 10,000 by the Mt. Lavinia Magistrate.

Arrest warrant on Katunayake UC chairman

Colombo Chief Magistrate issued a warrant to arrest the Chairman of Seeduwa- Katunayaka Urban Council for not being present in court to answer to a charge of accepting a bribe of Rs. 250,000 from an advertising firm.  The Magistrate ordered the Bribery Commission to execute the warrant. Former Magistrate gets suspended sentence

Colombo Magistrate imposed a fine of Rs.1500 and sentenced to one year’s simple imprisonment suspended for 3 years a former Magistrate for issuing cheques amounting to Rs.600, 000 without funds in her account. The complainant was to be compensated for Rs. 100, 000. The Magistrate further imposed a six months imprisonment term on the accused if the compensation was not paid.

A fraudulent job agent prosecuted

A job agent, Rajarathnam Wallipuram was prosecuted by the Colombo Fraud Investigation Unit for allegedly defrauding Rs 1.1 million from a job seeker promising to send him to Canada for employment. The suspect was released on certified bail of Rs.10, 000 by Mt.Lavania Magistrate.

A police constable nabbed

A police constable attached to the Marawila Police Station was arrested by the Bribery Commission for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rs.30, 000 from an illegal liquor manufacturer promising not to take legal action against him. The constable was nabbed while he was taking Rs.10, 000 as an advance.

The Mt. Lavinia Chief Magistrate refused application for bail in respect of 15 suspects who had been remanded in connection with the Golden Key Credit Card fraud and remanded them till April 23.

Raid on errant pharmacies

The National Drugs Control Authority raided 15 pharmacies in Kohuwala and Boralasgamuwa and discovered that 14 of them were not entitled to sell pharmaceuticals, a Health care and Nutrition Ministry spokesman said.
