An enforcement officer attached to the Department of Immigration and Emigration was nabbed by the Bribery Commission for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rs. 60,000 from a Pakistani national to extend his Visa.

Two racketeers remanded
Two females were prosecuted by the Mt Lavinia police for allegedly defrauding Rs. 0.8 million. The fraudsters had taken the money from two job seekers promising to send them to Italy for employment. The females pleaded guilty were remanded.0

More than forty acres of the fifty nine acres that belonged to Kandy General Hospital have been grabbed by encroachers obstructing extensions to the premier medical institution serving several districts of the country.

A suspect netted
A suspect was released on certified bail of Rs. 0.5million by Maravila Magistrate for allegedly defrauding a huge amount of money. The suspect had fraudulently taken the money from a person promising to assign a land belonging to him, but after taking the money the suspect had refused to assign the land, the plaintiff said at the court.

Prison guard helps LTTE
A prison guard at prison headquarters was arrested and detained at the Katugastota Police after it was found that he had a large sum of money to his credit in banks. Police arrested him on information provided by an arrested LTTE cadre that the organization had paid him to look after the welfare of LTTE cadres in prison. On this information, a special Police team from Colombo arrested him in the Katugastota Police area and detained him on a detention order.

Treasure hunting by cops
Monaragala Police arrested a Sub Inspector of Police, two constables of the Buttala Police and four civilians on suspicion of treasure hunting. Police sources said they were arrested near a newly dug pit in a jungle and there was a cylinder of LP gas nearby. They were allegedly excavating a land belonging to Maligawila sacred city.

False complainant fined
Galle Chief Magistrate Tamara Tennekoon, yesterday imposed a suspended sentence of six months and a fine of Rs. 1,000 to a person who was found guilty of lodging a false complaint at the Hikkaduwa police in order to obtain an insurance claim.

Lands Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga yesterday said that 2,560 hectares of land belonging to Land Reclamation Commission had been grabbed by several politicians and their supporters.

CEO is other interests
A lead has finally emerged regarding the whereabouts of Golden Key’s missing billions. A former employee of Barter Card Lanka Limited has disclosed that Golden Key CEO Khawan Perera was also chairman of Bartercard’s Sri Lanka subsidiary for over ten years, and alleged that under his management billions of Ceylinco funds had been embezzled through the firm’s cashless trading scheme.

Misleading the public
Ceylinco Consolidated (Pvt) Ltd made up of at least 96 companies both here and overseas, doesn’t have any assets and was incorporated for the sole purpose of misleading the public, depositors of the Golden Key Company have alleged in an affidavit to the Supreme Court.

Now in Prison Hospital
Ceylinco Chairman Lalith Kotelawela has been transferred to the Prison Hospital following a medical report submitted by the JMO that his condition is not critical. In remand since 11 February, he has been warded at the Merchants’ Ward of the Colombo National Hospital.

List of assets by 11 May
The Supreme Court has directed the Attorney General (appearing on behalf of the Monetary Board of the Central Bank) to submit a list of assets and properties belonging to every present or past director, Chief Executive Officer, Manager, Employee and agent of (GK) and other Related & Relevant Parties’ of the Golden Key Credit Card Company and others who have been ‘enriched through improper utilization of the assets of the company before the Court’, on May 11.
