Education sector officials have accused the Eastern Province education authorities of misusing state resources and violating national policy, a teachers’ union said yesterday.
It said some Rs.4.2 million had been spent by a top EP education ministry official for a series of workshops to educate zonal education directors on the teacher transfer process.
“It is easier to refer to the National Teacher Transfer Policy (NTTP) to learn about teacher transfers rather than organising workshops? This is wastage of public funds,” Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin said.
He said the principal of a national school in the Eastern Province had been transferred by the provincial education director for reasons only known to him though the usual practice was that transfers had to be authorized by the Education Ministry.
“The provincial education ministry is not authorized to make any transfers at national schools and it is illegal to do so,” Mr. Stalin added.
He said though several complaints had been made to provincial officials including the EP Governor on what had happened, no action had been taken.
