Commissioner of Elections Mahinda Deshapriya said that with nominations for polls to 23 local bodies, (17 MC’s, one UC and 5 Pradeshiya Sabhas), would be accepted from Aug. 18 to 25 and the applications for postal votes from yesterday.
The Polls Chief said that the elections would be held on or before Oct. 17, 2011. The electoral registers would be displayed at Kachcheris in the districts, where the elections were being held.
The Additional Commissioner for Elections (Provincial and Local) W. P. Sumanasiri said that the forthcoming local elections would be held according to the Electoral Register for 2010 in the districts of Colombo, Kandy, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Anuradhapura, Kurunegala, Badulla, Amparai and Ratnapura.
Senior SLAS Officer attached to the Elections Secretariat as an consultant Bandula Kulatunga said that the elections would be held to 17 Municipal Councils (Colombo, Negombo, Gampaha, Sri Jayawardenapura–Kotte, Dehiwala – Mount Lavinia, Moratuwa, Kandy, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Ratnapura, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Kurunegala, Kalmunai, Badulla and Anuradhapura) Kolonnawa Urban Council and Kotikawatte-Mulleriyawa, Kandy Gravets and Gangawata Korale, Suriyawewa, Hambantota and Kundasale Pradeshiya Sabhas.
