The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) has now taken over the investigation into the disappearance of senior journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda, police spokesman Preshantha Jayakody said yesterday.

Mr. Eknaligoda the father of two children went missing on January 24 after he left the Lanka E News office in Rajagiriya where he worked and when he failed to return home his wife lodged a complaint at the Homagama police station.

The Homagama police deployed two police teams to investigate Mr. Eknaligoda’s disappearance but they were unable to gather any worthwhile information. This had led to the investigation being taken over by the CCD.

It is believed he was abducted while on his way home.

Mr. Eknaligoda who was engaged in campaigning for the opposition presidential candidate retired General Sarth Fonseka, had also been abducted and released on an earlier occasion.

Reporters Without Borders has appealed to President Mahinda Rajapaksa to direct that the results of the police investigation into Mr. Eknaligoda’s disappearance be released.
