DISCUSSIONS TO REINTRODUCE RIGHT TO INFORMATION BILL

Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga says discussion will be held with Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa tomorrow (08) on presenting the Right to Information Act to Parliament again.

There is an urgent necessity in passing the bill in Parliament, he told Ada Derana.

The UNP MP charged that even though the government had stated that a proposal will introduced in this regard, there is no sign of the bill being presented to parliament.

Amaratunga pointed out that even the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) had confirmed the importance of the right to information.

Under instructions of Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe, Karu Jayasuriya presented the bill as a private member’s bill on two separate occasions. On the second instance the bill was rejected by a majority of 63 votes while the government stated it would present a proposal on the bill.

John Amaratunga further stated that no changes have been made to the previously rejected bill.

Responding to a query by Ada Derana, Acting Media Minister and Economic Development Deputy Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said that, at this moment no statement can be issued regarding presenting of the bill. (AdaDerana)
