The Secretary of the Ministry of Power and Energy said yesterday he is going to ask the Attorney General to take legal action against what he termed as “corrupt practices” in Lanka Electricity Company (LECO) in purchasing vehicles and land.

Addressing a media briefing yesterday at the Government Information Department, Secretary M.M.C. Ferdinando said that the corrupt practices in LECO in purchasing vehicles and lands have come to light after the release of reports of the five member committee appointed by the Ministry.

Mr. Ferdinando said that he appointed a five member committee this year to probe into the reports on the allegations against  LECO in purchasing vehicles and lands.

He also said that LECO is a government owned company, with more than 53 percent shares of the LECO owned by the CEB. He is expecting to re-inquire the issues with the Company Registrar before taking legal action. He said the corrupt practices at LECO had cost millions of rupees to the company.

These malpractices of  LECO include the purchase of a building and a land in Nugegoda for opening a new branch, purchasing a land in Gothatuwa and Hunupitiya-Wattala, purchasing a new building in Kalutara for opening a customer service centre and purchasing a building in Nuwara Eliya for a circuit bungalow.
