Bribery accused discharged

A fiscal officer, attached to the Badulla Court, who was charged with soliciting and obtaining a bribe of Rs.300,000, was acquitted and discharged by High Court Judge Sunil Rajapakse.

The accused in this case was Ajantha Shiromus Jayasinghe.

He was charged on four counts under the Bribery Act, including two for soliciting and two for acceptance of Rs.300,000.

In a complaint to the Commission to Investigate Bribery and Corruption, complainant Kumara Sudin, a resident of Vinigama in the Badulla District, alleged that the accused had solicited and accepted a graft of Rs. 300,000 to influence a case heard at Badulla Court.

Attorney-at-Law Mohan Sellapperuma appearing for the accused contended that the prosecution evidence had not proved conclusively the allegations levelled against the accused.

He also queried the credibility of the witnesses.

IP Sudasinghe conducted investigations on the complaint.
