The civic rights of a Public Health Inspector who obtained a bribe from a garment factory owner were suspended for seven years by the Colombo High Court.
The PHI Lal Weerasuriya who pleaded guilty to the offence of obtaining a bribe of Rs. 8,000 was also given an eight year jail term to run concurrently in two years suspended for five years. Judge Sunil Perera also ordered the PHI to pay the Rs 8,000 back to the complainant along with state cost amounting to Rs 80,000.
The PHI attached to the Dehiwala-mt Lavina Municipal Council had taken the bribe to avoid filing action against the garment factory owner who failed to maintain hygienic standards at a Moratuwa boarding house for his factory workers.
