Public and corporate sector sources expressed surprise yesterday at what was taking place at CEYPETCO saying that only a few persons had been penalized for the fraud involving the import and distribution of sub-standard petrol in July.
CEYPETCO took measures on Thursday to send its Assistant Commercial Manager Uditha Doloswala on compulsory leave following the recommendations of the three member committee headed by M.M.C. Ferdinando. The committee had found Mr. Doloswala to be one of the main offenders after a decision was taken to import and distribute 20,000 metric tons of what was later found to be adulterated petrol that stalled nearly 2,000 vehicles after using sub-standard petrol.
The loss making CEYPETCO is faced with another burden to pay compensation to motorists for the damage caused to their vehicles. “It is surprising that the CEYPETCO management took more than three weeks to take action against an officer who was found to be involved in the fraud after an investigation by the committee appointed to look into the mess. However, the CEYPETCO chairman must take full responsibility for the fiasco and should have resigned by now,” a source in the corporate sector said on condition of anonymity, for obvious reasons. “The head of the institution must take the full responsibility whatever happens at any institution in the private or public sector, whether it is good or bad,” the source added.
