370,000 officers to be deployed for elections

PAFFREL, CaFFE and CMEV will monitor the April 8 Parliamentary Elections with a contingent of 15,000 monitors. PAFFREL will obtain the services of foreign monitors from the Asian Network for Free and Fair Elections (ANFFE), said Rohana Hettiarachchi, the executive director of PAFFREL. 

Sources at the Elections Secretariat and the Police Election Secretariat said yesterday that a contingent of 370,000 officers would be deployed islandwide for security and election services in respect of the election.

80,000 police personnel would be deployed on elections day and during the post election period. The Elections Secretariat will obtain the services of 290,000 public servants to conduct the polls, a source at the Elections Secretariat said.

The Elections Secretariat will use the 2008 electoral register. The polling divisions and polling stations used for the January 26 Presidential Election will be used for the April 8 Parliamentary Elections as well, said W.P. Sumanasiri, the Deputy Elections Commissioner.

The Elections Secretariat will set up 10,875 polling stations in 160 polling divisions at 333 Divisional Secretariats for 14,088,500 voters to cast their votes at the April 8 Parliamentary Elections, said Mr.Sumanasiri.
