Caught while accepting a bribe
An Assistant Director of the Land Commission was nabbed by the Bribery Commission sleuths while accepting a bribe of Rs 100,000 from a ‘farmer ‘ who was really an official from the Bribery Commission. The payment had been arranged following a complaint by five farmers in Pottuvil who were told to give the money to release land for cultivation.

Over payment of pensions
The Pensions Department is losing few millions of rupees due to fraudulent activities of the staff, according to a report of the Auditor-General’s Department. Last year, a sum of Rs 44,632,728 had been paid in excess. This is a big increase from the previous two years when excess payments of Rs 27,740, 022 (2005) and Rs 28,295,762 (2006) have been recorded.

Fraud in two rural banks
The Fraud Bureau of the Kandy Police Headquarters is inquiring into a complaint that two rural banks are involved in a financial fraud to the tune of over 1.5 million rupees.

Promised employment not found
The Kaduwela magistrate ordered the immediate arrest of suspect involved in a deal where he had obtained Rs 207,000 from a pavement hawker in Borella promising to find a job in Italy.

Sakviti Ranasinghe case
The Nugegoda Chief Magistrate refused bail on a manager attached to the office of Sakviti Ranasinghe, who is absconding after fleecing a large number of depositors.

No-confidence on Kurunegala Mayor
The Opposition in the Kurunegala Municipal Council has given notice of a no-confidence motion against the Mayor on the grounds of wastage of public funds.

Mismanagement of Asgiriya Police grounds
There is discontent about the way the Asgiriya Police grounds is being managed after it was taken over by the Colombo Police Sports Division. Earlier it was under Kandy Division. Public are complaining that due to lack of supervision, many fraudulent deals are taking place.

Fraud in Textile Ministry
A fraud amounting to Rs 1400 million in the Textiles Ministry has been unearthed, says the Minister of Textile Development Mahinda Ratnatilleka. It relates to the award of tenders to purchase materials for the government institutions.
