An employee of the Water Board, who solicited a bribe of Rs 70,000 from a restaurant owner in Maradana, to adjust several water bills, was remanded till July 7 by the Colombo Chief Magistrate yesterday.
Bribery officers C. Chandrasiri and Ranjith Bandara who produced the suspect, Chandrasiri Balasuriya of Ranpokunagama, Nittambuwa, before the Colombo Chief Magistrate Rashmi Singappuli, submitted that the suspect was an employee of the flying squad of the Water Board. They said the complainant, an owner of a restaurant at Maradana, owed the Board Rs 500,000 in water bills and alleged that the suspect flying squad officer had demanded Rs 70,000 from the complainant to alter the bill to show a lesser amount thereby causing a substantial loss to the Water Board.
