All political parties must educate voters on how to mark ballot papers correctly in view of the upcoming elections including the Local Government Election to be held soon, a leading election monitoring group said yesterday.People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi said it was evident that voters were confused when selecting preferential numbers.
He said six per cent of the votes cast at the April 8 general election were declared invalid, and such a repetition should be avoided.Mr. Hettiarachchi said voters were confused when there were so many independent groups on the ballot papers.“Voters have to be educated. This is also the responsibility of political parties. They should not field so many independent groups,” he said.
