SC suspends corruption case against ex-GM Railways

The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued an interim order, suspending, until further notice, the proceedings at the Chief Magistrate’s Court, Colombo, against R.P. Wijesekera, retired General Manager, Railways.

The Commission to Investigate Bribery and Corruption had filed an application against Wijesekera, alleging corruption. The petitioner, Wijesekera, recently, filed a Writ Application in the Supreme Court, seeking to review the decision of the Commission, which he said was arbitrary.

The Supreme Court, yesterday, issued notice on the Director General, the Secretary of the Commission and also on the Attorney General, regarding the Writ Application, which was fixed for argument in the Supreme Court on January 28, 2011.

Shavindra Fernando, the Deputy Solicitor General appeared for the Attorney General, Sanjeewa Jayewardene appeared with Rajeev Amarasuriya, instructed by Amerasuriya Associates, for the petitioner Wijesekera.

The Supreme Court Bench comprised, the Chief Justice Asoka De Silva, Justice P.A. Ratnayake and Justice I. M. Imam.
