Rs.11 m worth street lamps damaged in Warakapola town

The street lamps fixed along the Colombo-Kandy Road within the limit of Warakapola town at a cost of Rs. 11 million have been damaged after six months, the Media Unit of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council said yesterday.

It was revealed by Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Keerthi Wijetunga at the Kegalle District Co-ordinating Committee recently.

The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Mahipala Herath and Justice Minister Athauda Seneviratne.Mr. Wijetunga told the meeting that all these street lamps had been fixed by the Road Development Authority (RDA).

“Half of these street lamps have been burnt now, after six months.  There is an unsafe situation in the Warakapola town during night as a result. The Pradeshiya Sabha does not have the technological know-how to replace these damaged lamps,” he told.However, Sabaragamuwa Provincial Director of the RDA who was present at the meeting said it was the duty of the local government authorities to maintain street lamps.

The Chief Minister also remarked that it was surprising to see all these street lamps burnt within six months.
