Right to Information Act a reality soon: Minister

Deputy Minister of Justice and Law Reforms, Vadiwel Putthirasigamoney told Daily Mirror yesterday that the Right to Information Act was being drafted and would be brought before the legislature in the near future.

The Deputy Minister explained that since Parliament has been dissolved they had stopped work on the drafting of the Act and they would restart the process once Parliament commences again. He added that apart from the Right to Information Act, other legislations such as the Protection of Victims and Witnesses Act were being drafted. He said that Minister Milinda Moragoda had formed a committee which is expected to report those drafting certain legislative acts. “The committee’s have not sent in their reports yet.

The Right to Information Act was first drafted and approved by Cabinet in 2003. However it was not passed as a legislative act in Parliament.
