Powerful politico is violating principles: CTU

ele2010DailyMirror

The Ceylon Teacher’s Union (CTU) yesterday alleged that a powerful politician was using principals and teachers in election work and urged the relevant authorities to take necessary action to prevent such malpractice.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said this malpractice was condoned and encouraged by the Education Ministry and zonal officers.

“Negombo educational zone school principals have been summoned to the Bolawalana Teacher’s Centre on March 4 and asked to submit  names of teachers attending today’s meeting,” Mr. Stalin said.

He said the meeting had nothing to do with education and was organized for the benefit of this particular politician.

Mr. Stalin said a similar meeting was to be held at the New Town Hall tomorrow for teachers and principals of the Colombo educational zone.

“Teachers in this area are being pressured by zonal officers to attend this meeting. This is a blatant abuse of power and misuse of government resources,” he said and added that it was a violation of election laws.

Mr. Stalin urged the Education Ministry and the relevant authorities to look into these matters and take necessary action to prevent this kind of blatant misuse of power.

Meanwhile, the Education Ministry Secretary Nimal Bandara said he was not aware of any education sector personnel being used for election work.

“We will not allow such activities and we will definitely take action to prevent it,” Mr. Bandara said.
