Around 500 vehicles imported duty free or at concessionary duty rates by NGO’s for official work have been taken for the personal use by some officers of some non-government organizations, information was received by the customs and the Ministry of Finance.
Out of these vehicles about 75% are Pajero Intercooler and Defender type vehicles.
The government has given permission to import these vehicles to help the tsunami affected communities.
Ministry had ordered the customs to seize these vehicles so far they have not done so. As a result the government had lost around Rs. 500m, sources said.
