The attorney general yesterday indicted former Deputy Minister Myown Mustapha at the Colombo High Court on charges of having offered Rs.4,200,000 to National Freedom Front member Mohamed Mazammil as a means of inducing him to support the common opposition presidential candidate.
Senior State Counsel Sudharshana De Silva filing the indictment told High Court Judge Deepali Wijesundera that by offering a bribe Mr. Mustafa had violated certain sections of the Presidential Election Act.
Mr. Musthapha was not present in court even though he had been noticed to appear in court for the case.
Defence counsel Wasantha Weerasinghe submitted a medical certificate from a hospital in Lebanon confirming that Mr. Mustapha had been hospitalized after he suffered a heart attack and a letter asking that the indictment papers be handed over to the counsel.
Judge Wijesundera directed that Mr. Mustapha be present in court on July 12 and fixed the next hearing for that day.
