Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister W. D. J. Seneviratne said that bribery and corruption and delay in attending to public matters would soon be eliminated.

Minister Seneviratne told a media conference in Colombo that bribery was rampant in government departments. In some departments, bribes were sought by high ranking officials and labourers to attend to the publics’ legitimate requirements.

He said an effective awareness programme to educate the public officials to refrain from bribery for favours would be launched island-wide. Although the Bribery Commission had been defunct for sometime, the general public could still inform the Public Administration Ministry of any incidence of bribery.

Deputy Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister Dilan Perera, said that one of the root causes for the collapse of the government services had been inefficiency and lack of interest in serving the public. A constructive employee appraisal system would be introduced while department and sectional heads would have to ensure their subordinates fulfil their responsibility.

Dilan Perera said that the Public Administration Ministry was established 40 years ago and had done yeoman service to government servants of all denominations.

The Deputy Minister said that bribery had been rampant and should be eliminated. All government servants should serve the public with clean hands, he said.
