Employees of the Inland Revenue Department would stage a sick note campign today in protest against decisions made by the Commissioner General of the Inland Revenue Department, sources said. They warned that severe action such as work-to-rule or even a strike would be taken if no favourable response was given.
Unions said that the protest campaign was also a means of showing their disagreement to the decisions made by the Commissioner General. “We are protesting for three main reasons, the first of which is that we are against the decision to absorb 370 officers from the provincial revenue service,” said Joint Committee of Trade Union of Inland Revenue Service (JCTUIRS) Representative, A. L Udayasiri.
He explained that such absorption of officers would be a hassle to the existing system of employees.
Mr. Udayasiri said that appointments, promotions and transfers were done under a completely different system from the Inland Revenue Department.
“The other problem is, the existing staff would face many administrative difficulties with the new officers,” he said. “We are also conducting this campaign because the administration has not amended the service minutes as agreed to by the trade unions and the administration,” he said.
Mr. Udayasiri explained that the service minute was outdated as it was 37 years old and needed to be updated.
