More than 30 grama niladaris attached to the Nuwara Gampalatha Divisional Secretariat in Anuradhapura took part in a training programme conducted by Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) on 16th September 2010.
The programme was part of the EU project implemented through TISL to enhance accountability in local governance.
Topics discussed at the training programme related to handling of issues faced by the grama niladharis while on official duty, their rights and responsibilities, building a cordial relationship with the public, and the importance of the contribution of grama niladaris for building a nation of integrity by eradicating bribery and corruption.
Expressing their appreciation, the participants said that they obtained a broad knowledge on finding options and solutions for the problems they face during their day to day official work. They were thankful to TISL for enhancing their knowledge on consequences of bribery and corruption and the importance of good governance.
R.M.S.M Rathnayake, Secretary to the Governor of the North Central Province, P.L. Madanayake, Divisional secretary – Madawachchiya and TISL’s Sandun Gunawardhene were the resource persons.
Similar programmes will be held in the divisional secretariat divisions of Horowpathana, Thamankaduwa, Higurakgoda, Addalachchenai and Kalmunai in the coming weeks.
