Govt. refuses to table Thilakawardene commission report in Parliament

The Island.lk:

The government on Tuesday (June7) refused to table a presidential report (commissioned in 2007), which dealt with corrupt procurement deals involving the Sri Lankan military.

Chief Government Whip Minister Dinesh Gunawardene ruled out the possibility of the report being made public citing national security.

Minister Gunawardena claimed that the revelation of the findings by the commission headed by Justice Shiranee Thilakawardene would be harmful to national security. The MEP leader was responding to a question by UNP Kalutara Distract MP Ajith Perera. The UNP MP queried whether Thilakwardena commission had identified irregularities committed in the procurement of arms purchase and to reveal to the House those involved in the fraudulent activities.

The UNP also wanted the Report tabled in the House.

Minister Gunawardena said that Opposition legislators had the right to raise questions in the House and the Government the right it choose the ones to answer.
