Discussion on Corruption in the Education Sector
Educationists, academics, Education Ministry officials, trade union representatives and media personnel were among the gathering participating in the TISL open forum on Corruption in Education in Sri Lanka held at Hotel Renuka recently. The discussion followed the launch of the ‘Report on the Forms & Extent of Corruption in Education in Sri Lanka’ based on the study conducted by a team led by Professor Amarasiri de Silva, Professor of Sociology – Peradeniya University, on the initiative of TISL. After the welcome address by TISL Executive Director, J C Weliamuna, the panel discussion began.
Taking part in the discussion were Mr. S.U. Wijeyaratne, Additional Secretary (Policy & Planning)- Ministry of Education, Prof. S Sandrasegaram, Dean of Faculty of Education, – University of Colombo, Dr. Harsha Athurupana Education Advisor – World Bank, Mr. Joseph Stalin, President – Lanka Guru Sangamaya, and Rev. Sister Canice Fernando, Former Principal – Holy Family Convent. The moderator was Mr.P.Weliwita, retired Director of Education. A lively discussion followed.
