A company which has been given the contract for garbage disposal in Colombo is up in arms over what it calls a fraudulent deal by the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC). It accuses the CMC of having given the contract to another (unsuitable) company for a bribe of Rs 800 million.
According to informed sources, the contract with the former company had been suspended suddenly.
It was also charged that the new company did not have the capacity to collect and dispose of garbage effectively. Sources said that the Supreme Court had ordered the cancellation of a contract between the second company and the CMC a few years back. “A fresh contract has been signed with this less competent company despite its poor track record,” the sources said.
However, a spokesman from the CMC denied the charge. He said that all contracts had been awarded after calling for tenders.
He said the new administration of the CMC (under Special Commissioner Omar Kamil) had conducted all procedures with regard to the awarding of contracts in a transparent manner.
Regarding the other charge made by the accusing company, the CMC spokesman said that the contracts were awarded district-wise (to the various districts of Colombo City) and that the contract awarded for the disposal of garbage of any given district was renewed from time to time.
